1,251,927. Dynamo-electric machines. SIEMENS A.G. 22 May, 1970 [24 May, 1969], No. 25020/70. Heading H2A. [Also in Division G1] Means for generating a unidirectional voltage related to a speed of rotation comprises a polyphase generator arranged to provide phase voltages having a flat-topped waveform configuration, and means for sequentially switching the flat topped portions of each waveform in turn to a common output. As shown a four-phase generator includes phase windings A, B, C, D and a permanent magnet rotor 2. Mounted on the rotor is a metal strip 3 extending over 180 degrees which serves as an exciting means for two inductive transmitters 4, 5 mounted at 45 degrees on either side of the field axis of the winding A. The transmitters consist of inductive proximity switches in oscillator circuits which become unbalanced and emit a signal when the metal strip is adjacent thereto. Signals x, y (which may be regarded as binary " 1 " signals) from the transmitters 4 and 5 are applied to inverting gates 9, 10. The outputs from these gates x, y will be "0" when the signals x, y are binary " 1 " and will be binary " 1 " when x and y are zero. Consider a clockwise rotation of the rotor. For “ revolution the strip 3 will be adjacent transmitter 4 only (signal x); for the next “ revolution it will be adjacent 4 and 5 (signal x and signal y); for the next “ revolution it will be adjacent 5 only (signal y) and for the last quarter it will be adjacent neither (no signals). The outputs of the inverter gates 9, 10 in corresponding periods are #y, zero, #x, and #x+#y. Four AND gates 11, 12, 13, 14, are arranged to respond to the combinations x+y, x+y, x+y y and x+y respectively and actuate electronic switches 19, 20, 21, 22 to connect phase windings A, B, C, D to a common terminal (23 or 25) for successive quarter cycles. The generator design involves a flux of triangular waveform which provides a phase voltage waveform having a flat portion extending over more than 90 degrees, so that the switching arrangement results in a unidirectional voltage whose amplitude is related to the speed of rotation. A modified switching arrangement is envisaged for a generator where the windings are connected in series opposition (Fig. 3, not shown). A further modification (Fig. 4, not shown) discloses an arrangement of a plurality of conductive strips and transmitters for use with a 16 phase generator.
