In a centrifugal gas compressor having rotatable inlet guide vanes 13, Fig.1, and a diffuser restrictor 29, the vanes and restrictor are both adjustable via a common mechanism comprising a control ring 15 rotatably adjustable on bearings 17 by a rotatable rod 35 and links 37, 39. The rod is rotated by electric, pneumatic or hydraulic means responsive to an operating condition of the compressor or its associated equipment, which is indicative of compressor load, e.g. the chilled water temperature in a refrigerator using the compressor, or the temperature of the discharge in an air compressor. The restrictor is connected to the control ring by rods 27 and rollers 25 which engage cam slots 21 in the control ring. The slots are so shaped, Fig.3 (not shown), that on rotation of the control ring the vanes are moved to their 60% closed position before the restrictor is moved. Thereafter, further rotation of the control ring causes the vanes to move between 60% and 85% closed while the restrictor moves between 100% and 5% open. Still further rotation of the control ring causes the vanes to move between 85% and 100% closed while the restrictor remains at 5% open.
