Book spine binding tapes - using heat fused adhesive and reinforcing threads

Wide crepe paper strip is coated on one face with a fusible adhesive in which are embedded reinforcing threads of polyamide or crimped synthesic fibres. The back edges of the folded sections in the made up book are roughened, coated with the same, hot adhesive and placed on the backing material allowing a 2-3 cm. overlap on each side, the strips being cut off accordingly. The overlapping ends are folded over by heated plates and stuck to the end papers. The wide strip is slit axially into tapes before the made up book is completed. It can then be trimmed and have the spine rounded for final binding in hard covers.
