In ultra centrifuge heads, the cylindrical shape of cells and their inserts, limiting speeds to about 60,000 r.p.m., is varied to a basically triangular shape with rounded corners. The triangle sides may be straight or of a curved geometrical outline. This new shape permits increase of centrifuge speeds by about 15% without affecting life, since, it offers more strength, better distribution of forces, less material strain by respectively greater wall thickness between cell and head circumference, larger supporting area, shifting centre of gravity toward the head axis and reduced weight.
