1339496 Opening tows; filter rods BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 24 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 6694/71 Heading D1F [Also in Division A2] A method of producing a tobacco-smoke filter material from a tow of fibrillated fibres obtained from a split film or fibres of thermoplastics material e.g. polyolefin film, comprises spreading the tow/and subjecting it to a stripping action by passing it over a drum 6 provided with spikes or needles 7. The tow preferably passes through two air-spreader boxes 2, 4 associated with a pair of driven nip rolls 3 one at least of which is resiliently loaded, then over centring guides 5, the drum 6, or tension control roller 8, a further pair of driven, resiliently loaded nip rolls 9, and is then fed via rolls 10 to a filter rod forming machine 11. The spikes or needles 7 are raked in a rearward direction relative to the rotation direction of the drum, and serve to break the interconnections in the web-like fibrillated material. The spikes or needles 7 are arranged in rows extending longitudinally of the drum, the spikes or needles of successive rows being offset longitudinally of the drum. The tow may be crimped before or after the action of the stripping drum, e.g. by gear crimpers or stuffer box crimper.
