Coating of a substrate by an aluminium phosphate is effected by (a) applying to the substrate a coating compsn capable of forming aluminium phosphate by heating, (b) drying the coating to eliminate the solvent of the coating compsn and (c) curing the coating compsn, the application and drying of the coating compsn being effected under conditions such that the surfaces tension of the coating compsn does not exceed the critical wetting tension of the substrate. Used for coating glass, metals, ceramics, carbon, cellulosic materials or plastic material. The coating is uniform, firmly bonded and free of cracks. The coated substrates have an improved resistance to abrasion an improved impermeability to materials such as oil, fats and moisture, and better antistatic properties.
