A method for making an information area comprising a relief surface patterned according to the information by using a laser beam or electron beam modulated to transmit the information, is carried out by first coating the carrier support with a material of such type and sufficiently thin that the beam easily evaporates it; the coating is also resistant however to an etching material so that when etching is carried out the message applied to the coating by the beam becomes etched into the support. Galvanic application may be used as an alternative to etching. Specif. the coating is 500 angstroms thick of Mg, Cd, Zn, Pb, Bi or Al upon a metal or ceramic base. The method may be used for forming printing dies.
