Process occurs at elevated pressures and at temps. of 100-150 degrees C with a mixture of CO and H2, in the pres. of a hydroformylation catalyst and an inert solvent in a ratio solvent : propylene of 1:1, pref. 1.5:1 to 2.5:1, by volume of liquids. Prefd. solvent is the high boiling residual fraction obtained as a product from the process after removal of the butyraldehydes, e.g. by distillation, and pref. after any butanols present have been removed. Pref. catalyst is Co carbonyl, added to the liquid medium at 0.04-0.5 g per 100 ml. liquid.
