Nickel-silica hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. for fully hydrogenating 2-20C olefins, 6-20C aromatic hydrocarbons, or 1-20C aldehydes) has a Na content 0.2 wt% in which the nickel has a specific surface 70 m2/g. Catalyst pref. contains 25-50 wt% Ni, silica-support is pref. kieselguhr or diatomaceous earth (10-70 wt% of total silica).
