The carbon present in liquid fuel supplied to a burner is gasified by producing in the nose of the burner a foam by the admixture of air and an emulsion of a hydrocarbon or other liquid fuel and water. The burner has a body 1 with a bore 2 in which is axially displaceably mounted a shaft 3 having a land 11 to cooperate with a fuel inlet port 12 and a conical valve 35 to cooperate with an outlet port 34 in a nose cap 16 which forms with the body an emulsifying chamber 15 and an air distributing chamber 22. Air or atomizing gas enters via a connection fixed to a tapped hole 20 in body 1 and passes through two holes 21 into chamber 22 and thence into chamber 15 through tangential slots 23 which give it a rotary motion perpendicular to the fuel distributing slots 14. Water enters via grooves 25 from a chamber formed between a sleeve 30 and the body 1.
