The starter motor has a main winding and two auxiliary windings. When the starter switch is pressed it completes a circuit through a coil which pushes the starting pinion into the flywheel and at the same time closes a contact. This contact energises both auxiliary windings through a series paralleling switch to start the motor at low speed. Further movement of the coil plunger closes a second contact which energises the main winding and puts the motor on full speed. Opening of the starter switch de-energises the coil, pulls the pinion out of the flywheel, open circuits the main winding and puts the second auxiliary winding across the armature by means of the series paralleling switch to produce a braking action.
