The inner lining of a hot-blast stove is built in sections which increase in size as one proceeds up the stack. Each section overlaps slightly the one above it, with a small gap in between, to allow relative movement. Each section is secured to an outer refractory section, which, because it is entirely protected from the hot gases, can be of a cheaper material which yet has the necessary strength. The whole is contained in a metal casing which is stepped as required to accommodate the steps in the refractory, and may be externally supported. The inner high-duty lining is therefore not subjected to the weight of the whole lining but only to the wt. of its own section. Taller stacks and higher temps can be obtd.
