1340527 End face seals COORS PORCELAIN CO 4 Jan 1971 [23 March 1970] 287/71 Heading F2B [Also in Division C7] An end face seal for a rotary shaft, e.g. of a water pump, comprises a ring assembly 24 including a ceramic sealing ring 25 having an elastomeric ring 28 bonded thereto by mean of a layer of metallizing material 26. The ring 25 is formed by compacting and sintering a powdered material containing at least 85% by weight of aluminium and the layer 26 may be of titanium or zirconium preferably applied by forced mechanical contact (see Division C7). The ring 28 may be of natural or synthetic rubber, polyurethane or polychloroprene and is bonded to the metallized surface of ring 25 by adhesive or vulcanizing. The assembly 24 is housed in a recess 22 in the pump impeller 20. A second sealing ring 32, preferably of ceramic, and an elastomeric annulus 34 are housed in a recess 30 in the pump housing 16, the annulus 34 being compressed to urge the ring 32 into facial sealing contact with the ring 25. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), each ceramic sealing ring (48, 58) has an elastomeric annulus (50, 56) which extends over the outer surface and the axial surface remote from the sealing contact face, the relevant surfaces being metallized before bonding the annulus thereto.
