Orifices 24 vary in size, the ratio of cross-sectional flow area of an orifice to that of the respective passage 14 not exceeding 1: 1 and being normally between 0À5: 1 and 0À1: 1. Plate 21 is secured by screws 22 and may be provided with a gasket 23. The apertures (19) through root 17 taper in the direction of coolant flow, a single aperture (19) possibly feeding two passages 14. Sheath 16 may be of sintered metal mesh.
