Actuator 10 comprises two pistons 83 joined by a rod 50 and reciprocal in piston chambers 11, 13 between which is mounted a housing 12 containing guide rails 72, 74 throughout its length for the support and guidance of the rod 50. Fluid-pressure is supplied to the chambers 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d through passages 32, 33 in the walls of housings 11, 12, 13 which lead from two ports (28), 29 in housing 12. A mechanism 35, Fig.3 converts linear movement of piston rod 50 into rotational movement of a shaft 34. One of the cylinder housings may be omitted Fig. 5 (not shown) or, alternatively one of the pistons can have a larger cross-section to provide larger forces Fig.6 (not shown).
