1391299 Inorganic compounds ARTHUR D LITTLE Inc 2 Aug 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 36192/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Inorganic compounds containing at least two elements, one of which is a metal and one of which has a high vapour pressure, e.g. intermetallics, are prepared by heating the reactants in a vessel fitted with both a mechanical and liquid seal and surrounded by an atmosphere having a pressure equal to or higher than the maximum vapour pressure developed by the reactants, the mechanical and liquid seals being such that high pressure gases diffuse through them. The mechanical seal may be in the form of a plug 23 threadably engaged with the upper part of the cylindrical reaction vessel 10 containing liquid reactant 18. The liquid seal 27 may be in the form of molten material occupying a portion of the annular channel 26. The sealant may be B 2 O 3 or BaO alone or mixed with BaCl 2 , NaF, KCl or NaCl. The reaction vessel may be heated by R.F. coils 28 in the pressurizing atmosphere 29. The reactants may be mixed during synthesis by direct stirring or by cyclically raising and lowering the reaction vessel as in Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). Nitrides are formed when the pressurizing gas is N 2 . The preparation of polycrystalline ingots of Hg 0À8 Cd 0À2 Te is exemplified.
