A cast iron having high toughness and thermal conductivity, a lamellar graphite formation and a substantially non-distorted ferrite lattice comprises:- .C.2.5-3.8% .Cr.less than 0.08% .H.less than 3ml./100g .Mn.less than 0.3% .P.less than 0.08% .S.less than 0.03% a silicon content reduced (as shown in Fig. 1) by at least 0.8% or one half as compared with the silicon content required for a conventional cast iron for making castings of the same wall thickness (see Fig. 2), the balance, apart from incidental elements and impurities, being iron.
