A cast iron having high toughness and thermal conductivity, a lamellar graphite formation and a substantially non-distorted ferrite lattice comprises:- .C.2.5-3.8% .Cr.less than 0.08% .H.less than 3ml./100g .Mn.less than 0.3% .P.less than 0.08% .S.less than 0.03% a silicon content reduced (as shown in Fig. 1) by at least 0.8% or one half as compared with the silicon content required for a conventional cast iron for making castings of the same wall thickness (see Fig. 2), the balance, apart from incidental elements and impurities, being iron. The alloy may contain up to 2.4% Ni, 0.2 - 1.0% Mo and low impurity amounts of As, B, Sb, Pb, Te, and Se. PICT:1094856/C6-C7/1 PICT:1094856/C6-C7/2
