1405212 Isotope exchange; heavy water ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd 17 July 1973 [19 July 1972] 34051/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and C2] Hydrogen-deuterium exchange between hydrogen-containing gaseous streams and liquid water or alcohols is catalysed by transition metal catalysts prepared by reacting a diphenylphosphinomethyl-substituted, preferably crosslinked, polystyrene with a transition metal complex containing a ligand weaker than -P(C 6 H 5 ) 2 and displaceable thereby, the metal being Ru, Rh or Ir. Suitable complexes include dichlorotetraethylene dirhodium, dichlorodicyclopentadiene rhodium, bis-(ethylene) rhodium acetylacetonate, and iridiumdicyclooctene chloride. When the product contains acetylacetonate ligands, the desired catalyst is that obtained by replacing such ligands with Cl by HCl treatment. Example V illustrates the deuterium-enrichment of water and ethanol.
