A pump room (1) has an inlet pipe (2) and a discharge pipe (10) and contains two pumping sets (1, 11). The main set (1) consists of a pump (3) driven through a coupling (18) by a hydraulic motor (17). The hydraulic motor is supplied from a hydraulic pump (14) which is driven by a constant speed electric motor (4). The hydraulic circuit has controls which permit the speed of the hydraulic motor (17) and therefore of the pump to be varied steplessly. The second pumping set (11) consists of a pump (3) driven through a coupling (12) by a constant speed electric motor (4). The main set is used to adjust output to demand and the second set is available for standby use and for exceptional peak loads.
