The transmitter employs an organic pigment emitting wide-band coherent radiation, and an electro-optic control unit in an optical resonator which selects a frequency falling to a transmission maximum as a function of the strength of an electrical field which varies the double refraction of a crystal located between polarisers. The pigment is excited to emit continuous radiation and the electrical field is varied as a function of a voltage which modulates the selected frequency for the purpose of information transmission. The effective length of the crystal is such that the free spectral range of the control unit covers the variation of the modulated selected frequency.
