Lysine esters (I) are prepd. by heating alpha-amino- xi-caprolactam (II) with 1, esp. 5-50 moles of a primary or secondary alcohol pref. ROH (R = 1-10C alkyl or cycloalkyl). (I) are intermediates for a polyurethane monomer, a polyamide additive and various pharmaceuticals. High yields and conversions are obtd.
