In the embodiment shown a cutter shell 11 is freely rotatable on a gearing shell 12 locked to a saddle 13 and carbide inserts 10 have elongated head portions 27 aligned along the insert rows and parallel leading and trailing flanks to provide a cutting structure interruption which is less than the pitch chord, the inserts in cutting simulating a continuous line contact with the formations.
