1363119 Polymerization of cycloolefins MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 14 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 57972/71 Heading C3P Polyalkenamers are prepared by polymerizing cycloolefins (excluding cyclohexene) in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a W, Mo or Ta compound, (2) a hydride, halide or organometallic compound of a metal (including B and Si) of Groups I, II, IIIa or IVa of the Mendeleef Periodic Table and (3) CO 2 or a compound (e.g. a carboxylic acid or salt thereof, a betaketo carboxylic acid or sodium carbamate) which generates CO 2 under the polymerization conditions. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in the presence of a solvent. In the examples cyclopentene and cyclooctene are polymerized in bulk and cyclopentene is polymerized in anhydrous cyclohexane using as catalyst one of WCl 6 , MOCl 5 , TaCl 5 or WOCl 4 which has been contacted with gaseous or frozen CO 2 and one of EtAlCl 2 , Et 2 AlCl, Et 3 Al, AlCl 3 , di-n-hexylzinc, tri-n-hexyltin or n-butyl lithium, the polymerization is terminated by the addition of HCl and methanol and phenyl-beta-naphthylamine is added to the product polymer which may be vulcanized.
