The wind surfer consists of a surf board connected to a movable mast, which is held in the body with its foot, so as to be movable to all sides. A sail has its luff fastened to the mast, and it is kept under tension. The sail is tensioned by a line from the clew passed through a batten or boom, fastened to the sail. The front end of the boom is hinged to the mast, and it may be curved according to the sailing position, with the rider on the surfboard holding to a line and leaning against the pull of the sail. The batten is of varying cross section, so that it is more flexible at the end than in the centre.
