The starting phase current for a three phase motor is supplied in a three phase star configuration, during which the valve can operate, and when the nominal motor speed is attained, the windings are switched to delta configuration and the valve is switched off. The simple valve is electromagnetically operated and requires little maintenance. It consists of a valve aperture in a plate in which the valve body is seated. This is pressed home by a spring, against which the valve can be opened by the movement of a shaft attached via a flexible coupling to an electromagnet. The whole arrangement is mounted in a suitable chassis. When the electromagnet is activated, the valve opens allowing a blast of air to pass through it, and further back in the system, through the electric motor.
