In the multiple-stage catalytic reforming of a hydrocarbon feed stream, the feed stream is fed initially to a first stage consisting of a number of fixed-bed, radial-flow catalytic reaction zones arranged in series and the effluent from the last of these zones passes to a second-stage consisting of a downflow reaction zone contg. a bed of catalyst particles which migrate downwards under gravity and which are removed at the bottom of the reaction zone while fresh or regenerated catalyst particles are supplied to the top of that zone. The process is applicable to various vapour phase hydrogenating and hydrorefining operations, but particularly to the reforming ofnaptha fractions for improving the motor fuel anti-knock characteristics thereof.
