Sludge separator with settling pit - having sludge conveyor on drive chains and sludge extractor pump

Sludge separator consists of a setting pit located in to slurry channel which works on the principle of gravity settling as the flow velocity reduces. The pit is divided into two zones. Teh first of these is at least twice as deep as the channel which feeds into it. The second zone ends in a baffle wall extending almost to the liq. surface which is preceded by a narrow depression at least as deep as the first zone with a sludge pump at the base. This has a sludge ine and outlet connected to it. In the pit are located a number of toothed drive wheels around which run drive chains with flexible scrapers attached. These serve to move the collecting sludge down onto the sludge pump. To remove sludge from a slurry in which it is suspended. The use of settling pits is known. However suspensions of many materials do not have adequate settling times and the use of sieves or strainers to supplement this often gives blockages. They are also very susceptible to changing slurry flows and sludge densities. The system described is no wider than the slurry channel but gives a sludge of high specific solids content and can be optimised for varying conditions.
