Cpds of general formula (I): where R=H or methyl; X and Y are same or different halogen atoms at pos. 5,6 or 7 of the quinoline rings; are prepd by reacting a cpd (II): with the alkali metal salt, pref. Na- or K-, of a cpd (III): in inert solvent such as ethanol, acetone, dimethylsulphoxide etc. at below 100 degrees C.
