Cpds. of formula (I) and metal salts and addition salts with nitrogen bases are new (where R is 1-4C alkyl or phenylalkyl with 1-4C in the alkyl part; n is 0, 1 or 2; R1 is H, acetoxy, (5-methyl-1,3,4-thia-diazol-2-yl)thio or (1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-yl)-thio; R2 is carboxy or CO2CH(R3)OCOR4 in which CH(R3)OCOR4 is a gp. easily removed enzy maticallmatically; R3 is H, 1-4C alkyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl in which the alkyl part contains 1-2; R4 is 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, cyclohexyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl in which the alkyl part contains 1-2C; or R1 is pyridino and R2 is carboxylato ion, provided that when R is alkyl, R1 is H or acetoxy and R2 is carboxy or R1 is pyridino and R2 is carboxylato ion, n must be 1 or 2). (I) are antibacterials active against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria in vitro and in vivo. Dosages are 1-12g/day for adults.
