As particularly described, the friction mechanism is an aircraft brake-disc 11 is rotatable and has driving lugs 16 for engagement with splines 17 of a wheel while disc 12 is non- rotatable and has grooves 13 for engagement with splines 14 of a torque tube 15. The rotatable member 11 is described as having an iris type construction and is made up of sectors with overlapping end edges of the strips forming frictional surfaces 24, 25. The strips 19 are of pyrolized cloth and bonds 22 are formed as graphite or carbon bonds by the pyrolysis of a resin such as phenolic. The non-rotatable disc 12 is built up from a plurality of annular strips 26 bonded together by a bond 27 in a flat laminated construction using the same materials as disc 11.
