An apparatus 10 for forming the shaped articles comprises a former 12 and an anvil 14. The former 12 is fixed to a former holder 18 by nuts and studs 20, 22, the holder being pivotable about an axis 24. A curved clamping surface 28 is provided on the holder and the former is correspondingly curved. Further curved surfaces 32, 32.1 are provided on the former to intersect the first curved surface 30 in bend zones 34, 34.1. The anvil presents a curved surface 36 complementary to surfaces 32, 32.1. The material 38 is clamped between surface 28, 30 to bend the material to a first curved surface with a predetermined portion 38.1 of the material projecting beyond the bend zone 34. Upon displacement of the frame 18 in the direction 40 the portion 38.1 is progressively bent to present a further curved surface intersecting the first surface.
