1434362 Zinc-halogen cells UNIGATE Ltd 17 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 17931/72 Heading H2B In a zinc or cadmium halogen electric cell such as that described in Specification 1,258,502, the halogen electrode comprises a substrate of anodizable metal or metals from Group IVa and Group Va of the Periodic Table which has been etched or heat treated to increase the crystal size or reduce strain, and is provided with a porous carbon coating made by pressing a friable carbon crumb on to the substrate, with a binder. The electrolyte may consist of zinc chloride with an additition of zinc sulphate to improve the plating of the zinc deposit. The cell may be cooled by forming the separators as hollow elements and passing coolant therethrough ; alternatively, a coolant fluid immiscible with the electrolyte is injected into the electrolyte and circulated through the cell the coolant having a specific gravity different from the electrolyte, suitable coolants being carbontetrachloride and sulphur hexafluoride. In another cooling arrangement, a fluorinated hydrocarbon is injected at the bottom of the cell, this liquid evaporating and the vapour being removed from the top of the cell. The carbon tetrachloride may also serve to deliver chlorine to the halogen electrode.
