The double walled heat retaining plate consists of stainless steel upper and lower shells, a heat retaining element of aluminium or aluminium alloy and a steel connector plate. The upper plate (11) has a depression (15) to correspond with a normal round dinner plate and is welded or hermetically sealed to the lower shell (10) so that a space is left between the two shells in which is fitted heat retaining element (13) fixed to the upper shell (11) by means of one steel connecting piece which fits in a hole in the heat retaining element and is welded to the upper shell so that a small space is left between the base of the heat retaining element and the lower shell. When in use the plate can be given a plastic or metal cover to keep the foof moist whilst in transit between the kitchen and eating place.
