Betaine acetyl aspartate, a novel compound having the formula FORM:1060951/C2/1 is obtained by reacting acetylaspartic acid with betaine in methanol, distilling off the methanol in vacuo and drying the betaine acetyl aspartate produced. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the above compound and having lipotropic action may be administered orally, parenterally or as a suppository.
