Carbamoyl formimido esters useful as synthetic inters. - prepd. by reacting cyanoformamide and alcohols

Novel carbamoylformimido esters are of formula NH2.CO.C(=NH).OR (I). (R is linear, branched or cyclic, opt. unsatd. alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl, pref. with 1-20, esp. 1-12C). They are prepd. by reacting cyanoformamide with ROH in the presence of a basic catalyst. (I) are inters for numerous org. syntheses. Pref. bases are tert. amines. In an example 0.2 moles cyanoformamide, 2 mole % Et3N and 1 mole methanol were refluxed for 1 hr. to give 7.5 g (37%) of (I; R = CH3) hemihydrate.
