Washing machine comprises =1 thermostat which can be set manually separately from the programme selector switch to control the temp. of selected programmes. At the end of the programme, the thermostat is automatically returned to zero position. A return spring operative independently of the programme switch may be connected to the thermostat. Pref. the programme switch includes a cam or a contact via which a lock which holds the thermostat in the set position against the spring is released at the end of the programme, by mechanical means and/or by means of an electromagnet. On the thermostat shaft are pref. mounted a torsion spring and a locking plate of which the latter is locked by a lever actuated by the programme switch.
