Microbially processing straw and lignified plant residues - to increase cellulose and hemicellulose digestibility on using prods. as feedstuffs
In the microbial treatment of straw and other lignified plant residues, ligning and cellulose-contg. material is disintegrated through fermentation activity of lignin-decomposing microorganisms or their mutants, alone or as mixts. The digestibility of cellulose and hemi-cellulose is increased by this process, the microorganisms may be replaced by their lignin-decomposing enzymes. The prods. may be used as feedstuffs. Prods. obtd. without adding N-sources are partic. useful as feedstuffs for ruminants. N-substitution allows prodn. of a protein or biomass which can be processed further. The treatment can be carried out on farms. Fermentation vessels do not require high capital investments. The plant is easily supervised and the fermentation material requires no expensive preliminary treatment.
