The rotary piston engine has flat piston end faces sealing against the casing. It produces the sealing effect by having within the casing (18) and adjacent to the rotor endfaces (15), at least in the zone of high pressure in the working chamber, flat spaces closed by a flexible membrane (14) on the rotor side and kept under pressure. The membrane may be an integral part of the casing or it may be a separate part inserted in the casing. Its face in contact with the rotor may be coated with a fluorocarbon or other low-friction material. The pressure within the space may be provided by external means, or by drilling a hole (17) from the max. pressure zone of the working chamber. Pre-loading of the membrane is provided by a spring (20) whose compression is adjustable from outside the casing.
