Each friction damper pad (10) is supported for engagement with a railway wagon body by two rubber springs (12) comprising laminated chevron plates extending parallel to substantially vertical support surfaces (13, 14), so that vertical movement places the springs (12) in shear and longitudinal movement places the springs (12) in compression. The unloaded angle (A) is 120 deg. and the static load angle (A') is 160 deg.; the angle (B) is less than 10 deg.. The chevron angle is about 150 deg.. The centre plates (17.1) of each spring (12) are connected rigidly by longitudinal members to form a frame, the inner parts (12.1) being fixed to the central block (15) and the outer parts (12.2) to the centre plates (17.1) of the frame. A rib (18) on the housing (11) co-operates with a groove (19) in the central block (15) to limit vertical and longitudinal displacement. The lateral walls of the housing (11) limit the transverse displacement of the springs (12).
