A liquid fuel for I.C. engines is converted into a gaseous fuel by applying pressure, heat and a catalyst in conjunction with an inert carrier gas (exhaust gases), in two successive stages. The first stage initiates the cracking of the fuel carried by the inert gas during a short period, assisted by a piston compressor. The second stage completes the cracking in a catalyst connected to the inlet manifold of the I.C. engine. This method produces an exhaust gas which is non-toxic and free from CO, NO and other toxic matter proscribed by the antipollution laws of some countries. The fuel is converted into high-octane gas which, combined with layered charging, allows a higher compression ratio and results in greatly reduced fuel consumption.
