A rotating wind anemometer has a fixed vertical shaft (1) on which a carousel assembly (3) rotates. This has four side pieces (5) at 90 deg. to each other of which supports a series of swivelling arms (6). Each arm carries a vane (7). The swivelling arms on each side are joined to a common connecting rod (9) which is linked to the piston rod (10) of a reciprocating damper cylinder (14). The pistons of sides diametrically opposite to each other are linked hydraulically to work in counter phase on each other. At rest the vanes are at 45 deg. to the vertical. In motion the ones on the windward side are pushed into the vertical and the linkage raises the ones on the lee side into the horizontal.
