The traffic lights for a road intersection comprise red yellow and green lights (1 2 3) actuated in sequence and an additional pre-warning light (4) which is combined with the green light (3). The pre-warning light is actuated a short time before the green phase ends and remains illuminated until the end of the green phase. Pref. the pre-warning light (4) comprises a white light surrounding the green light which is actuated several seconds before the end of the green phase to warn motorists to keep the road junction clear.
