The multi-stage piston compressor comprises a cylinder (1) with stepped piston (2) having sealing rings (15) in annular grooves (14), and at least one duct through which gas can flow from one stage into the next. The stages are formed by the two portions (3, 4) of the piston and corresponding portions (5, 6) of the cylinder. The duct is formed by radial gaps between the cylindrical piston and cylinder walls. A gap is formed between one end face (14a, 15a) of each ring (15) and groove (14). A radial gap is formed between the cylindrical piston and ring surfaces, and at least one recess (20) between the other end face (14b, 15b) of each ring and groove.
