The ring (1) has upper and lower end surfaces (9, 10) running between a radially outer surface (7) and a radially inner circumferential surface (8). Recesses e.g. through-holes (5), are constantly extended from the upper end surface to the lower end surface within a piston ring cross-section. The recesses are positioned between the radially outer surface and the radially inner circumferential surface, such that the recesses are covered in a piston groove (2) in an assembled state of the ring, where the piston groove receives the ring.
