Gelatin prodn. from pigskin by acid treatment and washing - with continuous neutralisation of acid diffusing from skin reduces washing time

In the prodn. of gelatine by treating pigskin with HCl or H2SO4 and then washing repeatedly with water, the acid diffusing from the pigskin into the first or later acid-free washing liquor is neutralised continuously, the liquor contg salt is drained off, then washed a few times with water, then the gelatine is melted with hot water. The amt. of waste liquor produced and the washing time are reduced, without detriment to the qliaty of the gelatin.
