IC engine of swashplate type - has oil pressure controlled to ensure hydrostatic lubrication of swashplate bearing over entire operating range

The engine has a cylinder block (1) with several cylinders in which pistons (4) reciprocate. Each piston has a piston rod (5) which ends in a spherical shoe (52) which seats in a recess in a swashplate (6). The swashplate is supported on a spherical bearing (7) on a sphere (8) on the internal end of the output shaft (11). A pump driven from a gear (112) on the shaft delivers oil through passages (20, 21, 22) in the mechanism to the swashplate bearing (7). Circular seals (23, 24) at the ends of the bearing prevent escape of oil. The oil pressure does not exceed the mean pressure on the bearing produced by the pistons and is greater than the bearing pressure at part load. This ensures hydrostatic lubrication over teh whole operating range.
