Spark welding appts. for welding metallic strips has principal and auxiliary clamps at a shearing station through which cutting elements are passed, and the clamps and the strip ends are then moved relative to each other in anticipation of welding. Before welding, and pref. b efore shearing, the strip ends are cleaned e.g. by a scraper.
