The invention relates to a method for remelt the surface of a about a rotational axis (22) rotating the workpiece, which surface has a different distance from the rotational axis (22), such as the cam (20) of a camshaft, wherein the surface by moving relative to a energy source (15) along a serpentine melt web (21) is melted. In order to obtain a constant hardness quality over the Umschmelzbereich, the relative speed between the energy source (15) and the surface to be hardened is controlled such that from peak to peak of the melt web (21) at least approximately equal distances (a) are obtained. The control of the relative velocity can be done for example by changing the rotational speed of the workpiece at a constant oscillating motion of the power source (15) or by changing the frequency of oscillation of the power source (15) at a constant rotational speed of the workpiece. The change in the relative velocity can be continuous or stepwise.
