The star-mounted ribs of the umbrella comprise flexible tubes (4) which are closed at one end. The inner ends open into a central chamber (5) which has a closable air inlet valve consisting of two parts (6; 7, 9). - One of these is fastened to the upper wall (3) of the chamber whilst the other which is designed as a valve plunger is fastened to the lower wall (2). The umbrella stock or shaft M is detachably fitted in the valve plunger which is preferably fitted with an internally threaded blind hole which opens downwards.
