The horizontally sliding/tilting window has a frame (1) and a main sash and a secondary sash (11, 13). In the closed position, these two sashes are located in the same plane. The main sash (11) is borne by a carriage (35) which can be displaced along a guide (33) arranged at the bottom of the frame (1). In this arrangement, the main sash (11) is connected to the carriage (35) by two pivot arms (43). The end, articulated on the main sash (11), of one pivot arm (43) is provided with a bevel wheel (49) which meshes with a bevel wheel (59) which is connected, fixed in terms of rotation, to an actuating member (57). The ends, articulated on the carriage (35), of the two pivot arms (43) are provided with a rotationally symmetrical groove, around which there runs an endless wire cable (61) which connects the two pivot arms (43) to one another such that they cannot rotate. On the upper horizontal frame leg (5) there is articulated, in the vicinity of the centre of said leg, a guide rod (71) with a finger (75) which projects into a guide groove (77) of the upper frame leg (17) of the main sash (11). The design and connection of the pivot arms (43) permits the main sash (11) to be displaced from its closed position into its slide position, without using linkages running directly along its frame legs.
